Music Instruments

A musical instrument is a device constructed or modified with the purpose of making music. In principle anything that, produces sound, and can somehow be controlled by a person playing it, can serve as a musical instrument. The expression, however, is reserved generally for items that have a specific musical purpose. The academic study of musical instruments is called organology.
  • Voice, that is, the human voice, is an instrument in its own right.
  • String instruments generate a sound when the string is plucked, strummed, slapped, etc.
  • Percussion instruments create sound when struck.
  • Friction instruments are any instrument that use friction to create sound. For example the Glass harmonica.
  • Lamellophones create a sound by the plucking of lamellas made from different materials (metal, raphia etc.).
  • Wind instruments generate a sound when a column of air is made to vibrate inside them.
  • Water instruments generate pressure waves by oscillation, turbulence, or similar disturbance in water.
  • Plasma instruments generate pressure waves by oscillation of matter in a high-energy state such as plasma.

    A single-reed instrument is a woodwind instrument that uses only one reed to produce sound. In a single-reed instrument the reed is attached to a mouthpiece that is blown on to vibrate the reed, producing the sound. By contrast, in a double reed instrument there is no mouthpiece, and the two parts of the reed vibrate against one another.

    Common single-reed instruments include the clarinet and saxophone.

    In addition, some bagpipes make use of single reeds.
