Coors Ceramics Co., Golden, Colo., has devoted the past 84 years to manufacturing ceramic products. Formerly known as Coors Porcelain Co., Coors Ceramics now ranks as the largest U.S.-owned, independent manufacturer.
The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of ACX Technologies Inc., develops, manufactures and sells advanced technical ceramic products across a wide range of product lines for structural and electronic applications.
Coors Porcelain was originally the Herold China & Pottery Co., which was incorporated in December 1910. The president and operating head was John Herold, a German artisan and ceramist with some knowledge in the field of heat-resistant porcelain, known then as ovenware.
Porcelain was named after its resemblance to the white, shiny cowry, called in old Italian porcella (little pig), because the curved shape of its upper surface resembles the curve of a pig's back. Properties associated with porcelain include low permeability, high strength, hardness, glassiness, high durability, whiteness, translucence, resonance, brittleness, high resistance to the passage of electricity, high resistance to chemical attack, high resistance to thermal shock and high elasticity.
